As you enter the village for the first time of travel to China, Tachuan's 'Five who touch the Sky' greet you at the entrance - a few metres in diameter and with histories spanning hundreds of years, the four maples and one camphor tree tower over the houses with their roots slowly carving their way through the rocky hill. These vast trees which dominate the village and the hills aournd it with their venerable presence provide plenty of shade in summer, and by the time autumn comes around thy are lit up in a patchwork of colour. This transition usually happens from late October until November, when trees finally shed their leaves and with them leave the swaths of artists who descend on the village during this spectacular festival of colour. During this busy month long period, the commotion in the village starts early. The artists wake long before sunrise and venture out into the surrounding hils with their tripods and easels, looking for the perfect spot to capture the first rays of the sun peaking through the mist. As the sun rises above the mountains, the colours are brought to life and work begins until the early autumn sunset when everyone heads back to the village.
Just a few kilometers away from Tachuan lies a vast bambbo forest which is another favorite of the migratory artisan, and also the setting for the famous fight scene in the cult film 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon'. If you carry on the path through the forest, you will eventually arrive at the village of Mukeng. This tiny place is only inhabited by a few families, who all share the family name Fu. The villagers live a simple life, retaining the friendliness and welcoming nature.
