Another Ancient Wall - Shou County Ancient Wall

Shou County was called Shouchun in ancient times. It is located in central Anhui and in the key position of Huai and Fei River (another famous city besides Yangtze River where you can enjoy the beautiful view by joining Yangtze River tour) area. Many important battles in Chinese history took place here. The former Qin army had “the battle of Fei Water” with Eastern Jin army here in AD 383. Some historical stories are from this famous battle, such as “throwing a whip to the river and the river stop slowing” (Tou Bian Duan Liu) and “When People were panic, they had illusion and saw a tree as a soldier”.

During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, the Later Zhou Dynasty army had a big battle with the Southern Tang army in Shou County. The general Zhao Kuang Yin of Later Zhou Dynasty was trapped in Shou County in the beginning but won the battle in the end. The award-winning traditional cake “Shou Xian Da Jiu Jia” was named after this story.

The existing wall was built in the Song Dynasty with a checkerboard layout of a Song Dynasty city. Shou County Ancient City is rigid and magnificent. It has a circumference of 7141 meterss and is 8.3 meters tall. It is boarded by the Hao river to the southeast, Fei River to the north, and Shouxi Lake to the west. There are four gates and each gate had dikes to protect the city.
